Whenever someone does that, I always just assume that they chose speciesism as their “cause” because animals can’t “speak” on their own behalves, so it’s easier for privileged white dudes (don’t tell me you haven’t noticed how all these strident abolitionist vegans JUST SO HAPPEN to be privileged white dudes) to “defend” them than it is for same privileged white dudes to actually work on their shit and stand in solidarity with other marginalized people.

Like how Propagandhi used to write all these songs and put stuff in their albums about being pro-feminists and queer-posi and anti-racist, but they kept fucking up about it because they’re a bunch of straight white cis dudes, and now they don’t sing about that shit anymore, instead they’re all about DEFENDING THE ANIMALS because THE ANIMALS CAN’T SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. So, you know, THE ANIMALS can’t call them on their shit and hold them accountable for being douchebags when they fuck up, like all those mean women/queers/POC did! Being anti-speciesist is so much EASIER than being pro-feminist or queer-posi or anti-racist, because with speciesism, there are no narratives coming directly from the mouths of the marginalized group in question, so you don’t have to de-centre your own voice and perspective in order to make room for them. How convenient!

Like, you can dress it up in as much social justice language as you like, but that’s not gonna change the fact that you’re doing exactly the same thing that anti-choicers do with fetuses: bulldozing over other people in order to leap to the defense of creatures and organisms whose silence allows you to project whatever the fuck your agenda really is onto their existence.
